New York-style pizza is not just food, it is an experience of that thin crust you can fold in half, a little crispy and marked with char.

And then there is that perfect symphony of cheese, tangy sauce, and the toppings. That is where the magic really happens! You could go the minimalist route – a classic cheese or pepperoni, and that is totally legit.

But, sometimes, you just got to go all out and pile on the good stuff, creating a flavor fiesta that bursts in every bite.

So, if you are feeling adventurous and want to take your slice to the next level, let’s explore some of those tried-and-true toppings that will tailor your pizza experience, not just the eating involvement.

When looking for the best pizza with that legendary thin crust there is no need to be in New York> many pizzerias across the country, including places like Pizza Birmingham MI, serve authentic New York-style slices that mimics the original magic.

The established New York Pizza Pie is an establishment that serves NY style pizza balanced with thin yet sturdy crust, tangy tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella and different topping options that add extra flavor without overwhelming the base.

Pepperoni

Pepperoni is all-time favorite. A little spicy goodness sprinkled on those crispy, curled-up slices bring a perfect blend of fat, salt, and a little kick to every bite. It complements the rich tomato sauce and the mild mozzarella beautifully!

Sausage

If you prefer more substance on your pizza, choose Italian sauce. You can either crumble it or slice it – it doesn’t matter! It adds a savory, slightly fennel-infused bite that pairs well with the classic NY style crust. For extra zing, you can opt for spicy sausage!

Mushrooms

Mushrooms bring out an earthy yet delicious umami flavor. The earthy richness pairs well with sauce and cheese. Add fresh or sautéed mushrooms to provide depth and texture to any pizza.

Onions

Whether red, white or caramelized, onions add a little sweetness and crunch. When added to the pizza and baked, they mellow out a little and blend seamlessly with other flavors. For bold flavor, try them raw on top of a hot, fresh slice.

Green peppers

Green pepper offer a fresh, little sweet crunch that nicely contrasts with the rich tomato sauce and melted cheese.

Pair them with sausage and onion for a classic combination but if you want a lighter option mix them with cheese and sausage.

Olives

Green or black olives add a briny, salty bite to your pizza. They work well especially with Mediterranean flavors like artichoke or feta cheese. Olive adds a distinctive taste that escalates the overall flavor profile of the pie.

Fresh basil

A few fresh basil leaves sprinkled on top of a hot pizza completely transforms its flavor. The slightly peppery taste of basil adds freshness that cuts through the richness of sauce and cheese. It is a staple on margherita pizza but works well on any slice.

Garlic

Add garlic in any form – minced, roasted or garlic-infused oil, the overall savoriness of the pizza is amazing.

Garlic pairs well with nearly every topping, adding warmth and complexity without overpowering other ingredients.

The final thought is – whether you stick to a simple slice of cheese or load the NY style pizza with toppings, there is no wrong way to enjoy a good pie.

So, the next time you visit the pizzeria, try these classic toppings to elevate your slice to perfection!
